It seems a shame that the state needs to meddle in the relationship between doctor and patient to ensure the privacy (and eventual liberty) of the patient, but it would not be necessary were it not for the statist drive to disarm the populace by any means necessary.
Therefor, I must demur: the left is not correct in this matter. Instead, they are their usual, tendentiously disingenuous selves.
The real solution to the problem would be to remove the state from the medical arena altogether. Repeal Obamacare, anyone?
When we consider the lapse of the "assault-weapons" ban, the spread of concealed-carry laws, and the acceptance of the individual-rights interpretation of the Second Amendment, we see that we are winning this issue. The other side is trying to use doctors as part of a retreat.
On the other hand, if this is combined with nationalized health care, we might see doctors being ordered to report on patients owning guns. Enforcing such a law will be easier if they already have government officials used to meddling with doctor's advice.
